The NEM 2.0 April Deadline is Key for Your Next Solar Project

At the end of last year, The California Public Utilities Commissions (CPUC) voted to end Net Energy Metering and replace it with a Net Billing Tariff, a new policy that features a substantial reduction in the net metering value of solar electricity. While current solar owners will continue to operate under their existing net metering policy, new solar owners under Net Billing can expect to earn 75% less for the excess power they push onto the grid.

For those with new solar projects ahead, there is a way to retain value under the previous NEM 2.0 policy. Solar customers can be grandfathered into NEM 2.0 by submitting an interconnection application for their solar system by April 13, 2023. Those who submit their application by the 13th can be grandfathered into NEM 2.0 for 20 years, while those who submit after April 13th will receive only 9 years of grandfathering protection. Projects that aggregate multiple meters (NEMA) can still sign up under NEM 2 rules after April 13th but CPUC is considering changes to NEMA that are expected later this year.

Now’s the time to take action. Start your solar project today or call JKB to learn more!
