Time to Get Even More from Your Solar System with a Repower

Your solar system is a valuable asset that’s been paying off for years. But, if it was installed before 2017, two things are probably true: 1) it’s now quietly underperforming, and 2) it’s still worth real money. We can fix the first and pay you cash for the second.

Here’s what’s likely going on with your aging system:

  1. Failing inverters: Inverters have an expected life of 10-15 years. Depending on the age or manufacturer of your inverters, there might not even be exact replacements available anymore. If they fail, the system goes down until they’re swapped.

  2. Degraded panels: Over time, solar panels degrade and lose efficiency. A decade in, output will be well below where it started.

  3. A system that no longer fits: You may have added pumps, expanded cold storage, or changed how and when you run. A system sized years ago may not still be the right fit today.

What you may not realize it's costing you: Your NEM 1 credits. You’re now paid full retail for the power you send back to the grid, but this benefit only lasts 20 years from the day your system switched on. After that, your export credits drop by about 80%. So, every year your aging system underproduces, you forfeit premium credits you can’t get back, and that window only gets shorter.

How a repower fixes it: Utilizing your current racking and existing interconnection agreement, we replace your failing inverters and degraded panels with modern models and technology. We preserve your existing billing tariff (NEM 1 or 2) and get the system onto the right meter and rate. If your operation has grown or changed, we consider options for battery storage or added behind-the-meter capacity to further support your energy needs. The best part? Repowers can go from signed contract to up and running in just a few months.

Two paths to repower:

  1. Pay cash. You pay directly for the repower and own your optimized system outright. You’ll keep 100% of the savings, tax credits, and depreciation.

  2. Let us finance. We buy your existing system up front and take care of the repower at no cost to you. From there, you pay a fixed rate for the power your system produces under an Energy Services Agreement (ESA). The starting rate is lower than what the utilities are charging you today. PG&E rates have historically been rising 8-12% per year, and our ESA only goes up 2.9% per year. The gap between your ESA rate and PG&E’s rates widens in your favor every year.

What happens when NEM 1 ends: If you finance your repower with an ESA, your rate steps down when NEM 1 expires, so your savings continue through the back half of the contract. No surprise rate cliff. You’re not locked in either – you can buy the system at fair market value starting in year six.

At JKB Energy, we understand building in California. Since 2008, we’ve installed hundreds of MW of energy capacity throughout the state. We know the local rules, interconnection processes, and what permitting actually takes. Now partnered with Solar Repower, we can offer this unique repower solution.

Why now?

The full 30% federal solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) has a critical deadline before it’s gone for good; you must have your repower placed in service by the end of 2027. Or, if your project is safe-harbored by July 4, 2026, you have up to four years to complete it. Either way, the time to start is now. PG&E rates are climbing at 8-12% per year while you wait.

On NEM 2 rather than NEM 1? Reach out too. The federal deadlines still apply, and a repower can still produce value and savings.

You made a smart call with solar. Let’s do even better.
